Artist Blog 3: Patrick Dougherty

Patrick Dougherty is considered an architect because of his work. He has figured out an effective way to build primitively with sticks. To date he has build over two hundred sculptures all over the world. Dougherty combined his love of nature and art to create beautiful architectural sculptures to please the world. From looking at his pieces they look sturdy and strong. Dougherty's sculptures are made out fo tree branches and the natural resources around. Many of his colosal projects required truckloads of sticks.
Close Ties, Scottish Highlands, 2006
Nine Lives, Columbus, Ohio 2006
All of Dougherty's pieces are naturalistic and organic. He likes to work with nature and expand on natures concepts. Doughetry's work is earth work, because he uses sticks to create his art work. In Close Ties he made some sort of building. Each section is a different level and the shape is slightly altered from each section. The assemblage of the structure looks cozy and a possible place to live. It seems like it could house someone from the rain. I think the artists is trying to make a natural art that blends into the landscape other then stand out like a house today does. Not all of his projects are buildings, like in Nine Lives he created a family. This piece of art speaks to me saying that mother nature pulls us together and is what can keep ups close. I feel like it means family and the earth are what give us the aspiration to live and pick us up when we have fallen.
